About us

We are a group of Christian believers who meet each Sunday at Whitley Lodge First School for worship and fellowship.

What has now become Whitley Lodge Baptist was first established as a church plant from Whitley Bay Baptist Church which had links with Whitley Lodge First School for many years, in fact since the late 60’s when a Sunday School was begun at the school.

At the beginning of the nineties, monthly family services at the school began and Whitley Bay Baptist Church decided to ‘plant’ a congregation there as part of its outreach to the town.

Some fifteen years later, we ‘grew up’ and on Easter Sunday, April 8th, 2007 we became a fully fledged constituted Baptist church within the Baptist family. Although we’re a Baptist church (see .. so what’s a Baptist?) many of us have come from different church traditions, or no tradition at all - and whatever your background you’ll find a warm welcome at Whitley Lodge Baptist Church!

As a church we are affiliated to the Baptist Union of Great Britain, and the Northern Baptist Association and we are members of the Evangelical Alliance.

.. so what’s a Baptist?

Probably the thing people mostly know about Baptists is that on the basis of the New Testament, Baptists claim that baptism is for believers only. Baptism is only for those who are able to declare Jesus is Lord. As a symbol of Jesus' claim on their lives, Baptists practise baptism by immersion, in which candidates symbolise their desire to die to self and to live for Christ.
